Opened in 1981, Balikpapan University (UNIBA) in the Indoensian province of East Kalimantan will be admitting more students as part of a mid-term goal to become a globally renowned higher learning institution.
Chairman Ismail Susiswo Rendi, who joined the university in 2006, explained: “By 2025, we want to be a world-class university. We hope that when people see the development of the university, they will come and join.”
With its slogan “The quality university to plan your future,” UNIBA currently has just below 5,000 enrolled students, but plans to increase that number by threefold by 2023. The school has six faculties and offers 14 degrees, including Master’s degrees in Science and Law.
UNIBA has also unveiled a 10-year plan to enhance financial aid for local and domestic students
To achieve its ambitious objectives and become a globally minded school, UNIBA recognizes that it will need to take in more partners and attract more investment.
Rendi said: “It will take stakeholders and investments to further the progress, and we hope to come up with the fastest solution possible. I think 10 years is enough time for us.”
At home and abroad, UNIBA has forged partnerships in science and research with the University of Indonesia, Indonesia Defense University, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy-National University of Singapore, Brunei University, and Leiden University in the Netherlands.
