Japan's Mitsubishi Corp. has signed a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) with German energy firm RWE and South Korea's Lotte Chemical Corp. to develop a clean ammonia project in the state of Texas.
Under the JSA signed on February 8, 2023, the three partners have agreed to explore the prospect of developing an integrated blue and green ammonia production facility in the Port of Corpus Christi. Blue and green ammonia are entirely renewable and its production is carbon-free.
The proposed project will bring together the considerable expertise and resources of the three industry leaders to produce up to 10 million tons of clean ammonia per year. Mitsubishi Corp, RWE, and Lotte Chemical Corp aim to start production and international export, with a focus on Asia and Europe, by 2030.
In a press release, Mitsubishi says it plans to introduce the use of clean ammonia as fuel in Japan by combining its vast knowledge in the field of ammonia and its experience in setting up global energy supply chains. It will later look into such clean energy opportunities globally.
The Port of Corpus Christi is the largest port in the United States based on total revenue tonnage and the U.S.’ largest energy export gateway.
