(Photo source: Nikkei Asia)</figcaption> </figure> ITOCHU outbid other parties interested in the Integrated Development Project for Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City located in Tainan. The early-stage contract, according to Nikkei Asia, is worth around $332,000 (10.8 million New Taiwan dollars). According to ITOCHU, the goal is to test its AI systems on a trial basis by the end of October. This is the first time the trading house has officially participated in an overseas smart city project. The Taiwanese government also announced plans to earmark an additional $306.9 million (or 10 billion NTD) to develop the country’s artificial intelligence (AI) industry. In line with this goal, ITOCHU will collaborate with various Taiwanese partners, including IT company Accton Technology and National Cheng Kung University. Home to the world's largest semiconductor maker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Taiwan has a global market share of 61.7%. CNN estimates that TSMC produces 90% of the world's super-advanced semiconductor chips, which are used to power everything from smartphones to artificial intelligence applications.

Texas offers businesses in critical and emerging industries, such as semiconductors and advanced manufacturing, across the country and around the world the tools and opportunities to grow and thrive,” said Abbott. “I look forward to meeting with business and government leaders in Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan to strengthen our economic and cultural partnerships as we work together to forge the future of innovation,” the governor added. On their bilateral economic relations, Japan remains one of Texas’ largest sources for foreign direct investment projects over the last decade. From 2013 to 2023, Japanese companies have invested $10.87 billion in 129 projects, creating more than 20,000 jobs in Texas. In the first five months of this year, Japanese companies have so far invested $1.47 billion in six additional projects, which are expected to create more than 520 new jobs in Texas. The state’s trade with Japan amounted to $31.2 billion last year, making Japan the fifth-largest total trade partner with Texas. The trip was paid for by the Texas Economic Development Corp., an independently funded and operated nonprofit organization responsible for promoting the state as a premier business location. Together with the Governor’s Economic Development & Tourism Office, Abbott said these two organizations were the cornerstones of his economic development agenda to build a bigger, better Texas.

After their training, the candidates are expected to return to Japan to work as engineers in the telecommunications, autos, semiconductor industries or at research institutions. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has said it will extend $6.4 million in subsidies to support the project, particularly for pre-departure training and living expenses of the trainees while overseas. LSTC is a research group formed by Rapidus and the government in 2022. Members include the University of Tokyo, as well as other national universities and research institutes. Under their partnership, Rapidus and Tenstorrent are seeking to develop specialized AI chips with lower power consumption than the graphics processing units made by U.S.-based Nvidia, the AI sector's current mainstay. “The joint effort by Tenstorrent and LSTC to create a chiplet-based edge AI accelerator represents a groundbreaking venture into the first cross-organizational chiplet development in semiconductor industry,” said Wei-Han Lien, Chief Architect of Tenstorrent’s RISC-V products. “The edge AI accelerator will incorporate LSTC’s AI chiplet along with Tenstorrent's RISC-V and peripheral chiplet technology. This pioneering strategy harnesses the collective capabilities of both organizations to use the adaptable and efficient nature of chiplet technology to meet the increasing needs of AI applications at the edge,” Lien added.

In a video message, Taiwan Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, a former New Jersey resident, highlighted the center's potential to boost trade and investment. “I am confident that the opening of the New Jersey Asia Pacific Center will provide strong momentum in boosting trade, investment, and people-to-people ties between Taiwan and the Garden State,” she said. The center, headed by Sam Lin, is the group’s fifth international office, joining others in India, Israel, Germany, and Ireland. Lin stressed the center’s role in facilitating increased trade and collaboration, particularly in sectors crucial to New Jersey's economic success, such as technology, life sciences, and clean energy. The event also featured remarks from Taiwanese Foreign Ministry Secretary General Daniel Diann-Wen Tang, who told those present, “We appreciate Governor Murphy’s decision to establish New Jersey’s first Asia Pacific Center in Taiwan as it reflects the strategic understanding of Taiwan’s role as a gateway to the broader Indo-Pacific region.”

So, what if you could automate customer service to ensure consistency? What will be its implications for businesses? One benefit of using technology is the ability to replicate task execution with extreme precision. For many firms, it makes sense to adopt automation using a hybrid model because of shifting cost structures. This means that basic tasks are performed by machines, while those that involve complex decision-making processes are handled by humans. Numerous banks and telecommunications companies have already adopted this model to the dismay of some clients, who still prefer dealing directly and instantly with human customer service agents. Long holding times and confusing options are some reasons that put off customers. Perhaps the better approach is not to replace the customer service representatives completely but to provide them with better tools that will elicit higher satisfaction levels from customers. According to a study by Aberdeen Strategy & Research, which interviewed 10,000 business leaders around the world, 59% agreed that customer service representatives, when empowered with AI tools and data, engaged more intelligently in customer interactions. The report follows the success of the regional reports produced in 2014 and 2015 on the strong Japanese-American links in Los Angeles, San Diego, Northern California, the Midwest USA, Southern USA, Southwest USA, New England and the Atlantic Coast. The special report will provide an update on the strong relationship between Southern California and Japan. As of 2016, Japan stands as the largest source of foreign-owned enterprise (FOE) jobs in Southern California, accounting for 21.7% of all FOE jobs in the region, with 2,440 Japanese-affiliated companies providing over 79,000 jobs. Scheduled to be published in June of 2017, the Special Business Report on Southern California will promote the robust trade and investment environment in the region.

This phenomenal growth is attributed to the city’s strategic location, rich natural resource and more importantly, the residents’ appetite for risk and openness to doing business.
