They have been run that way for a long time and many have no investor following in the United States. We try to bridge that gap. To meet the new guidelines, <a href="https://www.bitcoinsuisse.com/" target="_blank">Bitcoin Suisse</a> helped spearhead the work of international community members, resulting in a <a href="https://openvasp.org/?page_id=7#whitepaper" target="_blank">whitepaper</a> that proposes an OpenVASP protocol based on key design principles of decentralization, privacy, broad applicability, while remaining agnostic to the virtual asset being transferred.</p> <p>“OpenVASP is a roadmap to FATF compliance that enables VASPs to protect private and business-sensitive data. We hope the community will consider it as a blueprint. Building partners are welcome,” said Chris Gschwend, the head of CVA’s VASP AML Taskforce</p> <p>The OpenVASP whitepaper outlines a protocol that will allow VASPs from across multiple jurisdictions to transact between themselves without necessarily knowing each other and without the need to register with a central authority or database. Going forward, it is about to get much easier for investors outside New Zealand to access their Smartshare ETFs.</p> <p>Helping to set up a cross-border funds regime in the region, Smartshares is building partnerships through Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation to establish the <a href="http://fundspassport.apec.org/" target="_blank">Asia Region Funds Passport</a> in New Zealand. This new scheme will allow approved fund managers to sell their managed fund products to investors in other countries in the region.</p> <p>Smartshares was the only New Zealand fund manager selected when the pilot program was launched in 2018. Implemented also in Australia, Japan, South Korea and Thailand, the initiative is expected to challenge the well-established UCITS regime in Europe.</p> <p>Under this passport system, investors with funds across multiple countries must choose one country as its domicile. Despite its distance to most countries in the region, New Zealand is in an excellent hub for these cross-border funds because of its stability.</p> <p>“We are proud to be ranked by the World Bank as the easiest place to do business. We have trustworthy institutions, such as the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, as well as e­ffective regulators and competitive access to global service providers,” Smartshares CEO Hugh Stevens explained.</p> <p>“New Zealand has strong, robust and transparent regulatory frameworks. We are close to Australia but are different from Australia. All this makes New Zealand a nimble provider of investment products for Asia-Pacific investors. In 2013, Shinzo Abe became the first Japanese prime minister to visit the country since it gained independence. Divisional Manager of Growth Markets Eileen Sharpe said, “We value the sophistication, high-end technology, research and knowledge from Japan.”</p> <p>Committed to strengthening bilateral ties, the Irish government announced the multimillion euro project to build an Ireland House in central Tokyo that will serve as the location for its new embassy, as well as its other commercial, cultural and tourism offices. This will be the largest capital investment of the Department of Foreign Affairs.</p> <p>“Our investment in an Ireland House is a reflection of our investment in our relationship with Japan. Beyond being a top-class building, Ireland House must be a beacon for the Irish community in Japan and those Japanese who share an affinity with Ireland. Output and exports are growing strongly, and we view the Japanese market as a very important component of our export-oriented strategy for the development of the sector. It is also opportune that, after 60 years of Irish-Japanese diplomatic relations, our government is in the process of developing a new Ireland House facility, combining the chancery, ambassador’s residence and state agencies. This reflects Ireland’s strong commitment to its relationship with Japan.”</p> <p>He added: “It is important that we continue to diversify our market portfolio in the context of Brexit, and Asia is the perfect opportunity for that.”</p> <p><a href="https://www.bordbia.ie/Pages/Default.aspx" target="_blank">Bord Bia</a>, or the Irish Food Board, points out that Ireland and Japan have compatibilities in their food and beverage culture, especially with how they value sustainability and quality. Together with several homegrown brands, CEO Tara McCarthy believes it is the right time to build on the reputation of Irish food in the East.</p> <p>“We are looking forward to further growth because we believe that the type of products Japanese consumers are looking for fits the food culture that Ireland is producing well,” she said. While Bord Bia sets up a permanent office in Tokyo, the agency organizes several trade missions and has attended food exhibitions in Japan. This long-standing exclusive relationship has been a win-win for both companies, with a strategy that highlights evolving markets with reliable, relevant and sustainable technology.</p> <p>“It’s a little bit unusual to have a robust binding distribution agreement with a Japanese company as comprehensive as ours, but it has been immensely beneficial for us both,” said Rennicks Group Managing Director Michael Flanagan, who has worked with the company’s Japanese principals for 35 years.</p> <p>Early this year, <a href="https://www.toyota.ie/" target="_blank">Toyota Ireland</a>, the auto giant’s Irish-owned exclusive distributor in Ireland, and Toyota Financial Services launched a joint venture — Toyota Financial Services Ireland, the first such partnership with a local partner that hopes to facilitate car ownership in the country.</p> <p>“We see this as a vote of confidence of Japan in Ireland. Our decades-long relationship with Toyota, like Ireland with Japan, continues to flourish because of the shared commitment to work together and build a better world,” CEO Steve Tormey said.</p> <p>Back in the capital, Dublin City Council Assistant Chief Executive Richard Shakespeare said, “Dublin is a gateway destination for business to access European Union and U.S. markets and many of the global leaders in technology, research and financial services call the city home.”</p> <p>“The unique cultural and artistic heritage of Dublin combine to provide a spectacular and welcoming destination for visitors. But with a young and growing population, a rising middle class, and enormous tracts of arable land, the country is looking beyond mining and is promoting investments in the services, construction, real estate and agriculture sectors. Bolivia's success is best exemplified by Santa Cruz, once a backwater town of just 40,000 people 50 years ago. Today, the city is home to 3 million Bolivians, or nearly 30% of the country's population, and accounts for almost 40% of Bolivia's economic activity and foreign direct investments. This phenomenal growth is attributed to the city’s strategic location, rich natural resource and more importantly, the residents’ appetite for risk and openness to doing business. Scheduled to be published in the April 2017 in the Japan Times, the Special Business Report on Bolivia will highlight the investment potential of the country and its different cities.
