The move will capitalize on the increasing demand for renewable energy in a state where wind power dominates other forms of renewable energy.</p> <figure class="image-container floated-right" style="float: right;"><img src="https://www.gmipost.com/img/uploads/Z-Newsletters/2024-R2/2024-R2-US-Jap-WK-5-Mitsui-Solar-Farm.jpg" alt="" /> <figcaption class="image-caption">Mitsui's digital rendering of its planned solar farm in Texas (Source: Mitsui & Co.)</figcaption> </figure> <p>The solar farm, with a capacity of 150 megawatts, is currently under construction in Hill County in central Texas and is slated to start commercial operations in 2026.</p> <p>Mitsui plans to supply the generated electricity directly to companies and enterprises, as well as integrate it into the state’s general power system.</p> <p>Texas's pricing system for electricity, which varies according to the location of the power plant, convinced Mitsui to invest in the solar farm. Hill County's proximity to major urban centers in the state, such as Dallas and Houston, allows for potentially higher electricity prices due to high demand in these densely populated areas.</p> <p>Renewable sources account for 30 percent of Texas’s power generation with wind power being the primary contributor. Mitsui's investment decision was also driven by the significant growth potential of solar energy in the region. The company plans to monitor market trends and consider further investments accordingly.</p> <p>Mitsui & Co. Energy Marketing and Services (MEMS USA), which will be responsible for managing the retail and wholesale sales of 600 megawatts of electricity annually across Texas and other states, will distribute the generated power. Also, MEMS USA plans to install a 300-megawatt-hour storage battery by 2025, allowing the company to store electricity and supply it when demand is lower, thereby optimizing consumption and costs.</p> <p>The U.S. government’s support for solar power generation through the Inflation Reduction Act is expected to boost demand for renewable energy projects. Mitsui’s investment aligns with this trend, and other Japanese firms such as Idemitsu Kosan and Itochu are also expanding their solar power initiatives in the United States.</p>

At the forefront of balancing the interests of all the stakeholders in the electricity market is the <strong>Energy Regulatory Commission</strong>.</p> <figure class="image-container floated-right" style="float: right;"><img src="https://www.gmipost.com/img/uploads/Non-Report/Newsletters%202023/2023-R3/EDC-NL-R3-WK-8-PH-Energy-Regulatory-Commission.jpg" alt="" /> <figcaption class="image-caption">Energy Regulatory Commission Division Chief and Planning Officer Don So Hiong (ERC)</figcaption> </figure> <p>The ERC was established in 2001 as an independent body mandated to supervise rates and services in the electric power industry, as well as ensure consumer education and protection and guarantee fair competition in the market.</p> <p>To boost the supply of electricity in the country, the ERC has looked to renewable sources of energy, including solar and wind power.</p> <p>“The green energy option is being implemented right now wherein big consumers can choose what type of electricity is being supplied to their operations. Another green energy option program we are implementing is the distributed energy resource. Microgrid technologies will bring green energy to areas not connected to the grid. They will have an independent and cheaper supply of electricity,” <strong>ERC Division Chief and Planning Officer Don So Hiong </strong>explained.</p> <p>Amid all the prevailing challenges, the government agency remains focused on its primary task: to enforce a democratic and transparent regulatory environment, one that balances the interests of consumers and utility investors equally.</p> <p>“ERC deals practically with the applications of energy industry participants. When they want to build a project, like the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, which is the transmission concessionaire, they need to have it approved by ERC. Every cost that is passed to consumers or every project that affects electricity rates should be approved by the ERC,” So Hiong said.</p>

The term hydrogen-fueled is a misnomer because these vehicles will be powered by an electric motor. So, the more proper term is FECV, short for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle. In simple terms, power from the car’s battery will come from the reaction created when hydrogen is mixed with dioxygen.</p> <p>With the continued rise of electric vehicles or EVs, FECVs should not be viewed as competitors.</p> <p>“If you look at the design of the vehicle, it absolutely speaks to that complementary approach. You are still going to have a battery, but it's going to be five to 10% of the mass of a pure battery electric vehicle that would otherwise be in that powertrain. We have always looked at this as a complementary solution. It is competitive only at the margins,” said Seth Terry, CEO of New Day Hydrogen, a Colorado based company and member of the Colorado Hydrogen Network, a non-profit organization that is actively advocating for the shift to hydrogen fuel.</p> <p>Even Le Mans, the famed 24 hours endurance race, is embracing hydrogen power. ACO and GreenGT, the racing teams behind Mission H24 which is pushing for zero-carbon neutrality in auto racing, realized this milestone when the H24 prototype became the first hydrogen powered racer to run at the legendary circuit in northwestern France.</p>

Market analysis indicates that the U.S. is currently poised to lead the world in transitioning toward clean, decarbonized energy.</p> <figure class="image-container floated-right" style="float: right;"><img src="https://www.gmipost.com/img/uploads/SE%20USA%202023/JT-2022-SE-USA-Mitsubishi-Power-Bill-Newsom.jpg" alt="" /> <figcaption class="image-caption">Mitsubishi Power Americas President and CEO Bill Newsom</figcaption> </figure> <p>“By having the Center of Excellence located in the United States, we will have additional resources and clear focus to lead the global transition towards clean energy,” said Mitsubishi Power Americas President and CEO Bill Newsom, who recently reorganized the company’s business portfolios to focus on two areas: core power generation and energy transition to enable rapid growth to support the energy transition.</p> <p>The core power generation business of Mitsubishi Power Americas consists of hydrogen-capable gas turbine combined cycle power plants, aero-derivative gas turbines, new equipment manufacturing, repairs, and original equipment manufacturing and non-OEM services.</p> <p>“Our core business is strong, and we continue to be a global leader in heavy-duty gas turbine market share for the calendar year 2022. This is due, in large part, to MHI’s investment in Advanced Class technology, which provides improved fuel efficiency and higher-output gas turbines. We also thoroughly validate our technology at T-Point 2, a grid connected gas turbine combined cycle power plant, to ensure the highest quality. Our service businesses provide technology upgrades that allow existing assets to integrate with intermittent renewables and extend the overall life of the power plant,” Newsom said.</p> <p>The energy transition portfolio comprises businesses that are accelerating the pace of decarbonization, including hydrogen infrastructure, photovoltaic (PV) solar development, electrolyzers, and lithium-ion battery storage technology.</p> <p>“On the energy transition solutions side, we are developing and deploying technologies that will enable the power industry to reach net-zero no later than 2050. We are creating a partnership ecosystem to scale technologies. For example, in partnership with Magnum Development, we are developing the Advanced Clean Energy Storage Hub in Delta, Utah, which is the world’s first utility-scale green hydrogen production, storage and transport facility,” Newsom said.</p> <p>Mitsubishi Power Americas remains committed to providing the technologies and solutions needed for customers to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 economically and in line with the U.S. government’s target.</p> <p>Newsom stated that his team can deliver on its commitment with the help of the right partners and a steady flow of advanced technology from MHI.</p> <p>“By bringing the team together, we can innovate and accelerate the pace of the energy transition. We can leverage our various strengths, diverse backgrounds and different approaches to solve our customer’s challenges. Between the recovery of the oil sector in 2000 and the glut in oil prices in Ecuador, Correa gradually shifted supply to hydroelectric power with the construction of more dams and reservoirs.</p> <p>After a decade of Correa’s administration and two years into President Lenin Moreno’s leadership, Ecuador has become more open to foreign investment in the hydroelectric sector.</p> <p>“The new president, Lenin Moreno, is trying to undo the systemic corruption that has been put in place during the previous administration. This has also undoubtedly <a href="https://dialogochino.net/29133-ecuadors-china-backed-hydropower-revolution/" target="_blank">benefited</a> mostly contractors from the People’s Republic of China,” Jaramillo said.</p> <p>“Current power consumption in Ecuador stands at 5.5 gigawatts, whereas Ecuador’s capacity is at 7.5 gigawatts. Beginning in December of 2019, the national government will commence five more mega projects with the aim of being a net power generator in the region,” he added.</p> <p>Ecuador’s Ministry of Energy and Non-renewable Resources has stated its commitment to promote hydroelectric projects in anticipation of growing demand in line with its objective to generate sufficient energy supply to bring about development.</p> <p>As Japanese investment in Ecuador is not on the same level and depth as that in Brazil, Mexico, and Chile, President Moreno wants to change that balance. During a visit to Japan in 2018 to celebrate the centenary of diplomatic relations, he stated an open-door policy to Japanese investors who hopefully can improve his country’s energy infrastructure. While in Japan, the president also received a $70 million grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for development projects.</p>

During a visit to Japan in 2018 to celebrate the centenary of diplomatic relations, he stated an open-door policy to Japanese investors who hopefully can improve his country’s energy infrastructure.           • content<p>Following the disruption caused by the SARS-CoV-2 global pandemic last year, GMI Post is preparing a second Special Report on Greece, which will again highlight the country’s main economic players and hidden champions. The special report is planned for this summer to coincide with the opening of the postponed Tokyo Olympics.</p> <p>While the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic reversed the solid gains made by Greece in 2018, when the country exited its economic bailout program, the country is getting back up on its feet with cautious optimism as the government led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mistotakis efficiently oversees its vaccination rollout.</p> <p>Analysts predict that Greece’s GDP to grow between 3.5 and 4.0 percent in the coming months. Supporting this prediction is the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement, which came into effect in 2019, created the world’s largest free trade zone, and gave a strong boost to Greek agri-food exporters.
