        • content<p>The global response to the Covid-19 pandemic was unprecedented. Were it not for the close cooperation among governments and the rapid information-sharing among scientists, the world would not have seen the various vaccines that stemmed the deadly spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.</p> <p>Under normal circumstances, it takes several years to develop, test and release a new drug. The Covid-19 pandemic compressed the usual process to less than a year. Among the most widely-used vaccines were results of transnational partnerships: BioNTech-Pfizer (German and American), Oxford-AstraZeneca (British and Swedish), and Sanofi-GSK (French and British).</p> <p>Apart from this example of international cooperation in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, the world has witnessed remarkable advancements in areas like gene editing, regenerative medicine, precision medicine, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies for various diseases including cancer, rare genetic disorders, and infectious diseases.</p> <figure class="image-container floated-right" style="float: right;"><img src="https://www.gmipost.com/img/uploads/Non-Report/Newsletters%202023/2023-R2/Global-healthcare-trends-(BT).jpg" alt="" /> <figcaption class="image-caption">Telemedicine is becoming one of the fastest-growing sectors in healthcare.</figcaption> </figure> <p>With the rapid advance of technology, healthcare has moved beyond the clinic and hospital. Today, the emerging digital health sector has greatly improved healthcare delivery, patient outcomes, and efficiency through telemedicine, health apps, wearable devices, and remote patient monitoring.</p> <p>In the United States, Japan-owned <a href="https://www.gmipost.com/special-feature/99/us-midwest-2022/illinois/545222/omron-keeping-the-heart-of-the-midwest-beating.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Omron Healthcare launched VitalSight™</a>, a remote patient monitoring (RPM) product to manage hypertension, facilitate closer patient-to-physician communication, and improve data sharing to improve treatment engagement and health outcomes. Developed before the pandemic, VitalSight™ addresses the problem of hypertension, which afflicts 1 billion adults around the world, of which 166 million are in the United States.</p> <p>In Singapore, the company set up the HeartVoice Telehealth platform, which allows doctors to provide telemedicine consultations and remote health monitoring programs to their patients to treat acute and chronic conditions. It plans to expand the platform across the region.</p> <p>Genomics has also made its own breakthroughs, which allow for a clearer understanding of genetic factors in diseases and individualized treatment approaches. Precision medicine, based on genomic data, is increasingly making progress in developing and providing personalized therapies and diagnostics.</p> <p>Leading the efforts in this field, the <a href="https://www.gmipost.com/article/371949/stanford-center-for-definitive-and-curative-medicine-aims-to-cure-the-incurable.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stanford Center for Definitive and Curative Medicine (CDCM</a>) is on a mission “to cure patients with currently incurable diseases through the development of innovative cell- and gene-based therapies (CGT).”</p> <p>Since it was launched in 2017, the CDCM has been working on around 24 projects in the discovery, pre-clinical, and early trial phases.</p> <p>Meanwhile, the healthcare services sector has also benefitted from IT solutions for revenue cycle management, medical billing, consulting, and outsourcing of non-core functions.</p> <p>In Serbia, <a href="https://www.gmipost.com/article/545322/takeda-celebrates-a-decade-of-broadening-healthcare-access-in-serbia.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Japanese pharmaceutical giant Takeda</a> has worked closely with the public and private sectors over the past decade to establish the country’s first telemedicine and telehealth service.</p> <p>To meet the ever-changing demands of patients, doctors and caregivers, the healthcare sector will deliver even better results and further improve operational efficiencies with more international partnerships.</p>

Toyo Tire opened a 600,000-square-meter manufacturing site in Indjija in December 2022. According to Toyo Tire Serbia executive Yoji Imura, Serbia’s location in central Europe and highly qualified workforce make the country the ideal manufacturing hub.</p> <p>In the meantime, Heating & Cooling Expert has been exclusively promoting and growing the Daikin brand in Serbia for more than 10 years. He added that Japanese expatriates will surely encounter an impeccable quality of life and enjoy the natural beauty of the country.</p> <p>Complementing those efforts, the National Tourism Organization of Serbia is launching global campaigns yearly to bring in more international visitors. NTOS Director Marija Labovic said millions of tourists from around the world go to Serbia every year, charmed by its breathtaking nature, fascinating cultural and historical heritage, relaxing spas, vibrant cities, unique cuisine and sincere hospitality.</p> <p>With its great variety of tourism products and well-connected airports offering direct flights to numerous destinations worldwide, Serbia offers tourists and business executives vast opportunities for unforgettable experiences, the director said.</p>

        • content<p>Its lush landscape, crystal-clear waters, charming cities rich in cultural heritage, and gastronomic meals make Serbia one of Europe’s most beautiful and fascinating tourist destinations.</p> <figure class="image-container floated-right" style="float: right;"><img src="https://www.gmipost.com/img/uploads/Serbia%202023/JT-2022-SERBIA-TOS-Tara.jpg" alt="" /> <figcaption class="image-caption">Tara National Park in western Serbia (Credit: Milo Karakli)</figcaption> </figure> <p>With Europe expecting at least 596 million foreign tourists in 2023, Marija Labovic, director of the National Tourism Organization of Serbia (NTOS), shared why more people should see, explore and experience Serbia.</p> <p>“Serbia is a really outstanding destination for travelers who are searching for new experiences,” said Labovic, who highlighted the country’s five national parks, 16 nature parks, 70 nature reserves, and two UNESCO Biosphere Reserves as some of its top tourism spots.</p> <p>Aside from its many therapeutic spa and spring resorts, tourists from around the world are also attracted to Serbia’s distinctive cuisine and culture.</p> <figure class="image-container floated-right" style="float: right;"><img src="https://www.gmipost.com/img/uploads/Serbia%202023/JT-2022-SERBIA-TOS-Castle.jpg" alt="" /> <figcaption class="image-caption">Ramska Fortress in eastern Serbia (Credit: Luka Arac)</figcaption> </figure> <p>As more people resume post-pandemic domestic and international travel, Labovic said the NTOS was excited to work with the private and public sectors in and outside of Serbia to position the country both as an “experiential meeting hub” for business travelers and an internationally recognized destination in the long run.</p> <p>Under the Strategic Tourism Marketing Plan, the organization will increase its investment in marketing activities with key partner airlines, such as the national airline Air Serbia, to boost the country’s valuable connections with priority international markets.</p> <p>Just before 2022 ended, Air Serbia announced that direct flights between Belgrade and Chicago would begin for the first time in three decades, from May 17. Takahiko Katsumata</figcaption> </figure> <p>“We have been fostering good relations with Serbia despite the distance of 9,000 km,” said the Ambassador, who highlighted the mutual respect and trust that have been grown for more than a century. Katsumata also expressed his gratitude to the Serbia government, local authorities, and cultural groups for organizing several events to commemorate the milestone.</p> <p>As the two nations see the number of high-level state visits increase, Katsumata pointed out that relations between Japan and Serbia, both diplomatic and economic, have grown much closer over time.</p> <p>The highpoint came during the visit of late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2018, when he unveiled the Western Balkans Cooperation Initiative, which aims to support socio-economic reforms in the region ahead of their accession to the European Union.</p> <p>Today, there are more than 30 Japanese companies doing business in Serbia including JTI, Yazaki Corporation, Toyo Tire Corporation, and Nidec Corporation, all of which, according to Katsumata, recognized Serbia’s high-quality products, world-class talent, and commitment to social development.</p> <p>“There are many regional and global issues that we need to tackle together, such as sustainable development, climate change, clean energy, and disaster management. Given our history of friendship and cooperation, I believe Japan and Serbia can be excellent partners to take on these responsibilities for future generations,” he said.</p> <p>The Ambassador also expressed interest in further promoting sports exchanges with Serbia. The two countries both progressed beyond the group stages in the FIFA World Cup Finals in Qatar this year. Serbia’s national team manager, Dragan Stojkovic, spent seven years in Japan playing for Japanese club Nagoya Grampus Eight.</p> <p>“In my two years as Ambassador of Japan in Serbia, I have experienced the warm hospitality of the Serbian people and the country’s rich culture and tradition,” said Katsumata as he invited more Japanese companies and tourists to visit Serbia and experience the country.</p>

        • content<p>Created in 2016 to attract more foreign investment into the country and support local business, <a href="https://ras.gov.rs/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Development Agency of Serbia (RAS)</a> is at the forefront of building the economic strength of the country and boosting its reputation and global competitiveness.</p> <figure class="image-container floated-right" style="float: right;"><img src="https://www.gmipost.com/img/uploads/Non-Report/Newsletters/JT-2022-SERBIA-NL-WK%207-RAS-Serbia%20Development%20Agency-Jankovic.jpeg" alt="" /> <figcaption class="image-caption">RAS Director for International Cooperation Nikola Jankovic</figcaption> </figure> <p>GMI POST spoke with RAS Director for International Cooperation Nikola Jankovic and Public Relations and Communications Advisor Dragana Krunic to ask them: Why invest in Serbia?</p> <p>“We are here to show all the different opportunities in Serbia from north to south, from east to west,” said Jankovic, who stressed that foreign direct investment has grown steadily over the past four years and has averaged 3 billion euros annually. Since 2007, inward foreign investment has amounted to more than 37 billion euros.</p> <p>Jankovic attributes the growing interest in Serbia to four main factors: the availability of highly skilled labor as evidenced by Serbia's low unemployment rate of 12.8%; competitive operating costs relative to neighboring countries; its strategic location, which gives businesses an opportunity to operate as a manufacturing hub for duty-free exports to more than 1 billion consumers in the EU; and corporate and payroll tax incentives provided by the government to foreign investors.</p> <p>By promoting all of these benefits, RAS has built a well-connected ecosystem of international and domestic companies, among which are Nidec, ZF Friedrichshafen, Toyo Tires, Bizerba, Schneider Electric, Yazaki, Johnson Electric, Siemens, and Bosch.</p> <p>“They have a good partner in our agency to help and guide them through the whole process,” said Jankovic, who mentions that Serbia leads Western Balkan nations, as well as the Central and Eastern European regions, in the number of greenfield projects. Of the 147 greenfield projects in the Western Balkans, 105 are located in Serbia.</p> <p>Meanwhile Krunic urges more investors to check out Serbia, adding that RAS is ready to provide support, from planning all the way to the implementation.</p> <p>“We communicate with our partner investors and offer after-care services, so they can be in touch with us for any issues even after implementation. RAS Direct Investment Advisors are available at all times to answer any questions or provide assistance. That's the kind of stable and reliable partner they can expect in Serbia,” Krunic said.</p>

All but one of our initial meetings were with foreigners who have chosen to do work and do business in Taiwan.
