Andy Beshear (Photo source: Kentucky Today)</figcaption> </figure> According to a statement from the governor’s office, the trip comes towards the end of a record-breaking first term, during which the state secured the highest private sector investment figure in its history. Since taking office in 2109, Beshear has announced 88 projects by Asia-based companies, representing nearly $13 billion in investments and 13,000 new jobs, said the governor’s office. “There is no better place to do business in the United States than right here in Kentucky and this visit will allow us to share that message directly with business leaders in Japan and Korea. We look forward to meeting with existing employers and developing new relationships that will bring good jobs to the commonwealth,” Beshear said. To date, Kentucky has nearly 540 foreign-owned operations that employ more than 117,000 people. The state is home to 200 Japanese-owned facilities that employ 47,000 people and seven Korean-owned businesses that employ 1,200 people. The governor will be joined by his spouse, Britainy Beshear, Cabinet for Economic Development Secretary Jeff Noel, Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray and other executive officials, whose mission as Team Kentucky is to attract more investment and jobs to the state. Since the beginning of his administration, Beshear has announced around 1,000 private-sector new-location and expansion projects totaling nearly $32 billion in announced investments and creating more than 54,700 jobs.

Andy Beshear</figcaption> </figure> In an interview with The Lane Report, Commerce Lexington Inc.’s Executive Vice President of Economic Development Gina Greathouse said, “We are very excited about this new recognition for the region.” Site Selection attributed Greater Lexington’s success to its strong emphasis on improvements to make the region more attractive to foreign investors and improve the skills of its workforce. Among the newest investors from Japan is Funai Microfluidic Solutions (Funai), which relocated its business unit headquarters from Osaka, Japan last year. Lexington City Chief Development Officer Kevin Adkins said it was the first time a Japanese company moved its headquarters to Kentucky and made Lexington its home. “The relocation of our headquarters to Lexington was a natural progression as our facility transitioned from an R&D center to the driver of our global strategy. This facility’s unique blend of pioneering technology and exceptional skill sets fuels our vision,” said Funai Chief Technology Officer Mike Marra. Lexington has positioned itself as a home for innovative technologies by fostering a culture of competency and trust. The recent arrival of Funai has affirmed Greater Lexington’s transformation into a modern investment hub.

 - contentFor more than half a century, the Southern United States has attracted Japanese automakers and hundreds of other Japanese companies within the automotive supply chain, successfully drawing them in with a business-friendly environment and a consistent stream of reliable skilled workers. And with the seemingly unstoppable growth of the electric vehicle market, the Southern states are gearing up for the entry of more Japanese investment in the fast-growing sector. “Nissan has announced an additional $500 million investment to convert its Canton, Mississippi, plant from a gasoline car factory to an EV factory, while Bridgestone announced an additional $550 million investment in its Warren, Tennessee, plant,” said Japanese Consul-General in Nashville Yoichi Matsumoto. Meanwhile, in Oklahoma, ranked No. 16 on Forbes’ Best States to Do Business list in 2021, the expansion is also being observed in other industries and sectors, among them renewable energy. “By the consulate’s count, there are currently 27 Japanese companies in Oklahoma. The big ones are Hitachi Computer Products, TDK and Weathernews Inc. Mitsubishi Heavy Industry also has Intercontinental Jet Services Corp., which maintains and refurbishes small airplanes in Tulsa,” said Japanese Consul-General of Japan in Houston Hirofumi Murabayashi, who oversees the Southern United States. The city of Ardmore has adopted a practical view when formulating its development plans. “There is a significant opportunity for companies who are looking to get into the green energy sector. We also believe that automotive parts represent another significant opportunity for our region, given again our proximity to production facilities in Texas and to newer investments in electric vehicles within the state of Oklahoma,” said Ardmore Development Authority President and CEO William Murphy. While not traditionally a center of Japanese investment, Arkansas has stepped up its game to change that. The state’s efforts appear to be working. In 2020, Arkansas ranked No. 7 in Site Selection Magazine’s 2020 Governor’s Cup for new and expanded business operations. “The city government, the businesses that are located here, the chamber of commerce and the school district are working together to make sure that we have highly qualified, motivated employees in the pipeline for whomever would like to locate here in Fort Smith,” City Administrator Carl Geffken pointed out. Apart from the low cost of doing business, the Southern states also boast significant technical and intellectual credentials because of several world-class research institutions and national laboratories in the region. “As Japanese companies look here, we line up our resources to meet their needs and introduce them to the right partners that can fulfill their business plans. One of the functions we do is a matchmaking or referral service for Japanese companies and American companies,” said David Rumbarger, president and CEO of Mississippi’s Tupelo/Lee County Community Development Foundation, a nonprofit that promotes economic growth in the state’s northeast region. In Alabama, many cities and towns got a morale boost when Huntsville convinced Japanese car giants Mazda and Toyota to build their joint venture plant in the city. Likewise, the city of Opelika in central Alabama is confident it can attract Japanese companies because of various competitive advantages. “Opelika presents a very viable opportunity because of our ease of transportation, excellent schools and highly skilled workforce. Opelika is prepared to welcome Japanese investments in the pharmaceutical, bio, aerospace and advanced manufacturing sectors. Alabama is an extremely business-friendly state and the city of Opelika is fully committed to making sure our companies grow and succeed,” said Opelika Economic Development Director Lori Huguley.

It is also working on projects related to electrification, particularly laser welding technology used in battery manufacturing. “Once we validate and introduce that technology with our Japanese customers, more specifically EV (electric vehicle) battery manufacturers we are working with in Japan, we can bring that technology to our U.S. customers,” explained Shinwa Senior Managing Executive Officer Yoshiro Takitani. The Japanese car giant initiated operations in the state with a manufacturing facility valued at $1.33 billion, around a tenth of the amount to be invested across the whole country over the next five years. This was on top of the nearly $22 billion already invested in the United States. For Wilkerson, Frankfort must promote new opportunities for Japanese investors in advanced manufacturing, including the “automotive, electric vehicles and food and beverage sectors.” As the home of world famous bourbon, Frankfort has also attracted interest from whisky-loving Japan. In 2014, Japan-based brewer and distiller Suntory acquired Jim Beam, the well-loved home-grown makers of bourbon whiskey. The special report will provide an update on the strong relationship between Southern California and Japan. As of 2016, Japan stands as the largest source of foreign-owned enterprise (FOE) jobs in Southern California, accounting for 21.7% of all FOE jobs in the region, with 2,440 Japanese-affiliated companies providing over 79,000 jobs. Scheduled to be published in June of 2017, the Special Business Report on Southern California will promote the robust trade and investment environment in the region.
