In 1872, China sent out 30 government-sponsored students to the United States to get an international education. Over the years, the number of Chinese students wanting to study overseas has grown steadily, with the United States emerging the preferred destination until recently.
As of 2021, according to data provider Statista, the United Kingdom has eclipsed the United States as the top choice among Chinese students. Home to Cambridge and Oxford, British universities possess an enviable reputation around the world.
Because of their shared history, countries in the Commonwealth inherited an excellent educational system. Their common past has also contributed to the demographic and cultural diversification of their populations, which is one of the biggest draws for young students.
Aware of their economic importance, Canadian universities, as well as the government, continue to promote the country’s universities among international students, particularly those in China. This is in line with the government’s goal to welcome more than 1.2 million new residents by 2023.
Apart from the United Kingdom and Canada, the Commonwealth countries of Australia and New Zealand have also become viable options for Chinese students because of their proximity, milder climate, and relaxed lifestyle, among others.
While the COVID-19 pandemic still poses challenges for countless people around the world, aspiring international students appear undeterred. In fact, Visa Tracker has reported that the number of visa applications among Chinese students grew as of August 2021.
Through this second edition of Guide to Education in the Commonwealth, GMI Post hopes to present Chinese students with well-regarded options in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom for quality education, both in secondary, college and post-graduate levels.
