Imagining a future with China

Jan 30, 2021

Prof. John Shields, Academic Director - International, University of Sydney Business School

“We want to maintain our appeal to high-achieving, aspirational, inspirational and globally-minded students from China. The University of Sydney is very well regarded in China, not least because we were one of the first Western universities to engage with academics from China 40 years ago.

“We set our admission standards quite high for China and we particularly want to encourage graduates from (top level) Project C9, 985 and other 211 universities into our master’s programs in business and management.

“Ten years ago, most of our students from China were from non-211 universities. Now, we are attracting a much larger number of Chinese bachelor’s students from 211s, UK and North American universities and other Australian campuses. This is the strategic priority that we will be pursuing in the years ahead.”

Vivienne Stern, Director, Universities UK

“We hope Chinese students will remain our friends and allies when they begin working. We hope to maintain a clear understanding of each other, which is something very important. So, the people-to-people element is important to us.

Also, Chinese students represent one-fifth of all international students in the UK, a very significant part of our university community, and we’re very proud of that. Universities are well set up to cater to Chinese students. That means if you go to major universities there will be great Chinese restaurants and supermarkets that selling food and other thigs that Chinese students miss. So, there are great opportunities to absorb other cultures and mix with people from all over the world, while having also a little taste of home wherever you choose to go.”

Professor Patrick Deane, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Queen's University at Kingston

“All Canadian research universities, like Queen’s, must think of themselves as international institutions working together with global partners to solve the world’s most urgent issues. At Queen’s, we build internationalization into the curriculum, and cross-cultural learning into student experiences. We put a premium on student exchanges and mobility and support their academic and personal success, and we warmly welcome international students to our beautiful campus on the shores of Lake Ontario.

“China and Chinese students are an important part of Queen’s history. We are proud of the

relationships that we have built with Chinese students, their home institutions, and the communities they call home.”

“The UK has a large number of top-ranking universities that provide high-quality education, a pleasant student experience, excellent job prospects for international students, and

competitive post-study works offer for graduates. We provide a truly global study experience for students, with UK universities hosting nearly 500 million international students from around the world and one-fifth of staff from overseas.”

“Chinese students in our campuses are really important. They bring skills to our research, diversity to campuses and stimulate the local economies they are situated in. And in a

survey conducted here in 2019, 93% of Chinese respondents stated they received salaries three times higher than the national average in China. Those respondents also said they were more like to do business internationally because of their experience abroad.”
