To support the government’s objective of sustainable economic growth, the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) has prioritized a program to develop a maritime technological park in Penajam Paser Utara regency in the province of East Kalimantan.
While the project is targeted towards the oil and gas industry, the ministry plans to build more technology parks as part of its strategy to further accelerate industrial development in this emerging economy.
Minister Andrinof Chaniago said: “The goal of the government is to improve the quality of life and create an advanced society to bring us forward. The other norm is to accelerate the economic growth, but not at the expense of letting inequality become larger.”
Aside from outlining national development plans, Bappenas is also in charge of setting Indonesia’s annual growth targets and identifying its long-term goals. In performing its task, the agency coordinates closely with international counterparts on bilateral and multilateral levels.
Bappenas has also identified the following objectives: increase energy productivity, promote tourism, and raise manufacturing output through greater utilization of its natural resources.
Chaniago also said: “We have many potential resources, a surplus in gas, and so much potential in hydropower. We know our problem now is how to make it become more productive.”
Bappenas intends to achieve its goals following strict guidelines to preserve the environment, which is a vital part of its development model.
